Motorcycle
Safety and Young Pillions
The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG UK) continues its
support of questionnaires on subjects from theft to riding habits and rider's
opinions on road safety.
For too long riders groups have relied on analysis of
statistics gathered by other parties, which government uses to produce
strategies for motorcycling.
MAG is turning the tide somewhat with support for
two new surveys on road safety and carrying young pillion riders.
MAG's Director of Public Affairs says, "We
need questions answered to get to the heart of facts and figures. Surveys and
questionnaires are not the glamorous side of motorcycling but for MAG to
continue its successful lobbying and research they are a necessity."
The Road Safety questionnaire has been developed to
complement an in depth analysis of over 1000 motorcycle accidents as part of an
in-depth road safety study by Craig Bartle, a post graduate student studying
for a Masters degree.
The Carrying Young Pillion Riders questionnaire is aimed
at gathering perceptions on the sensitive issue of transporting young
passengers especially as the exemption from congestion charging is encouraging
a more widespread use of motorcycles and scooters.
MAG cannot ignore the possibility of a move to restrict
pillion riding. Already questions have been asked in Parliament relating to
minimum age requirements, safety and the existence of plans to improve safety
of motorcycle pillion passengers.
